IELTS Academic Writing — Task 1 & Task 2 Guide

Everything for IELTS Academic Writing: describe charts and diagrams in Task 1, argue clearly in Task 2, and check your band with AI feedback.

IELTS Academic Writing explained

IELTS Academic Writing has two tasks scored together as one band. Task 1 is a 150-word report describing visual data — bar charts, line graphs, tables, maps, or process diagrams. You must summarise the main trends, make comparisons, and write a clear overview without copying every number from the graphic.

Task 2 is a 250-word essay — identical to General Training Task 2. You must answer the question directly, develop ideas with examples, and organise paragraphs logically. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1, but a weak Task 1 overview can still cap your overall score. Use the Academic Writing checker after each draft to see whether overview, argument, or grammar is the bottleneck.
