What is a Task 1 overview?
The overview is a 1–2 sentence summary of the main trends or stages in the visual — not a list of every number. Examiners look for it in Task Achievement; without a clear overview, Task 1 rarely scores above Band 6.
A Band 7 overview states the most important pattern and the key comparison (highest/lowest, fastest change, majority trend) without raw data dumps.
Common overview mistakes
- ✕Listing every figure instead of summarising the main trend
- ✕Placing the overview after body paragraphs (put it in paragraph 2)
- ✕Using vague language with no comparison (e.g. 'numbers changed a lot')
- ✕Describing the visual type instead of the data message ('The graph shows…' only)
- ✕Missing the standout feature examiners expect (e.g. fastest growth, only decline)
