IELTS-style sample question

Some people believe that online learning is more effective than classroom learning. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Question type explanation

Opinion Essay

Core position

Partly agree. Online learning is flexible and accessible, but classroom learning is still better for interaction, discipline, and immediate feedback.

Band 7 sample answer

Online learning has become very common, and I partly agree that it can be more effective than classroom learning in some situations. Its biggest advantage is flexibility. Students can watch lessons at home, repeat difficult parts, and use digital materials at a pace that matches their level. This is especially useful for adults who work full time or for learners who live far from good schools. Online courses can also be cheaper because students do not need to travel or pay for accommodation. However, classroom learning still has important strengths. In a physical classroom, students can ask questions immediately, work with classmates, and receive quick feedback from the teacher. This kind of interaction is difficult to replace with videos or online quizzes. Some students also need a fixed timetable and direct supervision because they lose motivation when studying alone. Younger learners, in particular, may find it hard to concentrate at home because of phones, games, or family distractions. In my opinion, online learning is very effective for independent learners and for subjects that can be studied through recorded explanations. However, it should not completely replace classroom learning. The best approach is a blended system in which students use online resources for review and practice, while still attending classes for discussion, correction, and guidance. This gives learners both flexibility and human support. For a balanced essay, it is also important to avoid saying that one method is always best. Different learners need different forms of support, so the answer should compare situations rather than make an extreme claim. This makes the position clearer and more realistic.

Band 9 improved sample answer

Online learning can be highly effective, but I only partly agree that it is better than classroom learning in every situation. Its main advantage is flexibility. Learners can review recorded lessons, pause difficult explanations, and study at times that fit their personal schedules. This is particularly valuable for working adults, university students, and people living in areas where specialist teachers are not easily available. Online platforms also give learners access to a wider range of courses than one local school could normally provide. Nevertheless, effectiveness is not simply a matter of access to information. In a classroom, students receive immediate feedback, take part in discussion, and benefit from the discipline created by a teacher and peer group. These features are especially important for younger students and for subjects that require debate, collaboration, or close guidance. A student who misunderstands a concept online may continue making the same mistake for weeks, whereas a teacher in the room can notice confusion and correct it quickly. For this reason, I believe online learning is powerful when students are mature, motivated, and able to manage their own time. Classroom learning remains stronger when interaction, structure, and instant correction are essential. Rather than treating one method as superior, schools and universities should combine both. Recorded lessons and digital practice can support independent study, while classroom sessions can focus on questions, discussion, and feedback. This balanced model is likely to be more effective than relying on either format alone. A strong response should therefore judge effectiveness by learner needs, not by technology alone. The most convincing position is that online tools improve access, while classroom teaching protects interaction and accountability.
