IELTS Writing Task 2 Advantages / Disadvantages Essay: Band 7+ Method

In many countries, an increasing number of employees now work from home rather than commuting to an office. While this arrangement offers clear benefits, it also has drawbacks that deserve consideration.

The main advantage of remote work is flexibility. Employees can structure their day around personal commitments, avoid the stress of commuting, and often report higher job satisfaction. Companies benefit too: distributed teams can hire the best talent regardless of location, and many firms report lower overhead costs after reducing their office space.

The main disadvantage is the loss of spontaneous collaboration. Many of the most productive ideas in a workplace arise from casual conversations at the coffee machine or in a meeting room, and these are very difficult to replicate over video. Remote work can also blur the boundary between work and personal life, leading to burnout for some employees.

Overall, the advantages of flexibility and access to talent outweigh the disadvantages of reduced collaboration, particularly for roles that are largely independent. A hybrid model, in which employees spend two or three days a week in the office, is likely the most sustainable arrangement.
