Band 7 writing requirements by country — what nurses need

Country / Body
Requirement
Notes
United Kingdom (NMC)
Band 7 in all four skills
Academic IELTS. Each skill must reach 7.0 individually — no averaging. OET is also accepted but IELTS is more widely available.
Australia (AHPRA)
Band 7 overall, 7 in each skill
Academic IELTS. The writing requirement is often the hardest to meet for nurses from non-English-speaking countries.
UAE (DHA / DOH)
Band 6.5–7 depending on role
Registered Nurses typically need Band 7 in each skill for DHA Dubai or DOH Abu Dhabi registration.
Canada (NNAS / NCLEX pathway)
Band 6.5–7 for RN registration
Most provincial nursing colleges require IELTS as part of the NNAS assessment. Writing is commonly the lowest-scoring skill.
Ireland (NMBI)
Band 7 in all four skills
Academic IELTS. Requirements are the same as UK NMC in practice — Band 7 per skill, no exceptions.

Requirements change. Always verify the current band score requirement directly with the registration body before sitting the exam.

Task 2 topics nurses encounter most

Healthcare topics appear frequently in IELTS Task 2. Your nursing knowledge is an advantage — but only if you use it as evidence for an argument, not as a personal anecdote.

Healthcare and public health

  • Should governments fund preventative healthcare or treatment?
  • Is it the government's responsibility to ensure citizens have a healthy lifestyle?
  • Should healthcare be free for all people in a country?

Tip: Use specific healthcare examples: vaccination programmes, lifestyle disease costs, NHS/public health system arguments. Avoid generic points like 'health is important'.

Technology in healthcare

  • Some people think technology has improved healthcare; others disagree. Discuss.
  • Should AI be used to diagnose medical conditions? Give your opinion.

Tip: Nurses can draw on genuine clinical knowledge here — diagnostic accuracy, electronic records, telemedicine. This is a competitive advantage in Task Response.

Work and stress

  • In many countries, people in high-stress jobs work long hours. What problems does this cause?
  • Some people believe that job satisfaction is more important than salary. Do you agree?

Tip: Do not write autobiographically. Use evidence-based arguments about workplace wellbeing, even if you have personal experience — IELTS Task 2 requires an academic stance.

4 mistakes that keep nurses below Band 7 in writing

1

Writing like a clinical report

Nurses are trained to write clearly and concisely in a clinical style — bullet points, abbreviations, passive voice. IELTS Task 2 requires full discursive paragraphs with a personal argument. Clinical writing style actively hurts your Coherence and Cohesion score.

2

Using personal experience as evidence

Statements like 'In my ward, I have seen...' or 'From my nursing experience...' are not accepted as evidence in IELTS Task 2. Use general arguments and where possible reference societal trends, studies, or widely accepted outcomes.

3

Not committing to a position

Nurses are trained to consider all sides of a patient situation, which makes 'To what extent do you agree?' questions hard. IELTS examiners expect a clear stated opinion in the introduction — not a balanced discussion without a conclusion.

4

Under 250 words in Task 2

Task 2 requires a minimum of 250 words. Writing under 250 words triggers an automatic length penalty on Task Achievement. Most Band 7 essays run 265–320 words — enough to develop arguments without padding.

Your nursing career is waiting. One writing score is blocking it.

Most nurses stuck at 6.5 have 1–2 structural issues — not a language problem. This checker identifies exactly which criterion is holding your score back and what to change before your next attempt.

Frequently asked questions — IELTS writing for nurses

Which IELTS test type do nurses need — Academic or General Training?

Almost all nursing registration bodies (NMC, AHPRA, DHA, NMBI) require Academic IELTS, not General Training. Academic IELTS Task 1 is a report on a chart or graph; General Training Task 1 is a letter. If you are applying for nursing registration in UK, Australia, UAE, or Ireland, you need Academic IELTS unless explicitly told otherwise.

Can I use OET instead of IELTS for nursing registration?

OET (Occupational English Test) is accepted by NMC (UK), AHPRA (Australia), and NMBI (Ireland) as an alternative to IELTS. OET writing involves clinical letters rather than discursive essays and may be easier for nurses already comfortable with clinical writing. However, IELTS is more widely offered and results are accepted by more employers and visa bodies.

I failed IELTS writing at 6.5 multiple times. What should I change?

A persistent 6.5 in writing almost always indicates a specific structural issue rather than a general language problem. The most common Band 6.5 → 7.0 fixes are: (1) adding a clearer thesis statement in the introduction, (2) starting each body paragraph with a topic sentence that states the main claim directly, (3) using more varied linking devices rather than 'Firstly, Secondly, Finally'. Use this checker to identify which specific criterion is capping your score.

How much does it cost to retake IELTS for nursing registration?

IELTS costs vary by country: approximately £195 in the UK, AUD $385 in Australia, AED 1,100 in UAE, and PHP 12,000 in the Philippines. You can retake individual skills using IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) if you failed only writing — this is cheaper than a full re-sit and is accepted by NMC and most registration bodies.

Does this checker prepare me for the specific topics nurses face in IELTS?

Yes. The checker evaluates your essay against the four IELTS marking criteria — Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — regardless of topic. Healthcare topics are common in IELTS Task 2, but the examiner is evaluating your argumentation and language, not your clinical knowledge.
