AI IELTS Writing Checker Methodology: What to Test

A transparent, repeatable way to evaluate AI IELTS Writing feedback against the public Task 1 and Task 2 band descriptors.

Last reviewed: November 5, 2026 · This is a method guide, not a measured accuracy claim.

Short answer

The useful question is not whether an AI checker produces a confident number. Test whether it identifies the same highest-impact weakness that the public IELTS descriptors reveal, explains the evidence in the essay, and suggests a revision that can be checked again.

A repeatable four-step test

  1. 1. Choose a real script. Use a completed Task 1 or Task 2 response with its exact prompt. Do not test on a polished sample whose weaknesses are unknown.
  2. 2. Predict the main blocker. Read the public descriptors for Task Response or Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Write down one criterion you expect to be weakest.
  3. 3. Compare evidence, not tone. Check whether the tool names a weakness visible in the script and connects it to a criterion. A fluent explanation is not evidence by itself.
  4. 4. Revise once and repeat. Apply the suggested change, keep the rest of the draft stable, and submit another script of the same task type. One agreement is a useful observation, not a benchmark.

Illustrative example, not a user case study

Imagine a Task 2 essay that answers the question but gives only one-sentence explanations for its main ideas. A useful report should identify thin development under Task Response, point to the affected paragraph, and ask for a specific extension or example. Replacing three words with rarer synonyms would not address the main problem.

What this method cannot prove

  • It cannot establish an official IELTS score or examiner agreement.
  • It cannot turn one essay into a reliable personal trend.
  • It cannot replace reading the prompt, the public descriptors, and the actual evidence in the essay.
