IELTS Essay Types

Task 2 essays come in four main types. Understanding each type and its unique requirements is essential for achieving a high band score.

Most Common

Opinion Essays (Agree/Disagree)

You must clearly state your opinion on a given topic and support it with reasons and examples. This is the most frequently tested essay type in IELTS.

Question Formats:

  • "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"
  • "Do you agree or disagree?"
  • "What is your opinion?"

Recommended Structure:

  • Introduction: Paraphrase + Thesis
  • Body 1: Your opinion + reasons
  • Body 2: Alternative view (optional)
  • Conclusion: Restate opinion
Second Most Common

Discussion Essays (Discuss Both Views)

You need to discuss both sides of an argument and then give your own opinion. This essay type tests your ability to present balanced arguments.

Question Formats:

  • "Discuss both these views and give your own opinion."
  • "Some people believe... Others think... Discuss both and give your view."

Recommended Structure:

  • Introduction: Introduce topic + thesis
  • Body 1: First viewpoint + analysis
  • Body 2: Second viewpoint + analysis

Advantage/Disadvantage Essays

You must analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a given topic. You can choose to discuss both sides or argue that one side outweighs the other.

  • "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?"
  • "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages."
  • "What are the benefits and drawbacks?"

Problem/Solution Essays

You need to identify a problem and propose solutions. This essay type tests your ability to think critically and present practical recommendations.
